Cabang Panti Resaerch Station

HISTORY OF CABANG PANTI RESEARCH STATION (CPRS)

Cabang Panti Research Station (1o13’ S, 11o7’ E ) is a 2100 ha site at the western foot of the mountains in Gunung Palung National Park. This National Park encompasses 90,000 ha of coastal forest and mountains (maximum elevation 1116 m), including one of the largest remaining remnants of primary lowland mixed Dipterocarp forest on Borneo. Gunung Palung National Park has been an active site of scientific research since 1985. Since 1985 more than hundred researchers make research in CPRS. The research aspects that have been research in CPRS were Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii), Bornean White-bearded Gibbons (Hylobates albibarbis),and other primates, birds, other mammals, herpetofauna, and diversity of genera plants. Some of the researcher make long time period of research until now.

ECOSYSTEMS PRESENT IN CPRS

The uniqueness of CPRS is that several different forest types at found at a small geographic scale. At least 7 (seven) different forest types are present in the 2100 ha CPRS Site. These habitat types provide a natural control on the factors that can confound comparisons between sites that are separated in space or time. These habitats are contiguous, thus minimizing differences in rainfall, latitude, seasonality, gamma diversity, and predation pressure that could confound results (Cannon & Leighton, 2004). CPRS is composed of seven distinct, contiguous forest types, determined by elevation, soils, and drainage: Peat Swamp forest on nutrient poor, bleached white soils overlaid with variable amounts of organic matter (5–10 m asl); Freshwater swamp forest on nutrient-rich, seasonally flooded, poorly drained gleyic soils (5–10 m asl); Alluvial forest on rich sandstone-derived soils recently deposited from upstream sandstone and granite parent material (5–50 m asl); Lowland sandstone forest on well drained sandstone derived soils with a high clay content and sparse patches of shale (20–200 masl); Lowland granite forest on well drained, granite derived soils (200–400 m asl); Upland granite forest on well drained, granite derived soils (350–800masl); and Montane forest (750–1100 m asl) (Marshall, Andrew J, 2008).
